Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Automobiles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.

Officers then found many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials state preliminary tests suggest the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; authorities are presently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for tips.

A senior representative stated the incident made him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.

"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
