Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these treatments should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
